As a high school teacher, Pat Murton noticed that many boys experienced difficulties learning to read. Although the prevalent thought at the time was that reading was inherently easier for girls, Mr. Murton believed that by working closely with children, they could all become effective readers regardless of gender. He founded Murton's Child Development Center in 1956 to offer an in-depth reading program to pre-schoolers as young as three years of age. Over time Mr. Murton was proven correct, and the child development center bearing his name continued to grow and expand the curriculum it offers to area children. We met recently with Director Hajni Fekete, and listened as she outlined the services provided by Murton's Child Development Center;

Murton's Child Development Center offers care for toddlers from eighteen months of age, pre-school classes for three year olds, pre-kindergarten for four year olds, and kindergarten for five year olds. In addition to reading classes, our curriculum includes math, science, social studies, art, musical instrument instruction once a week with a certified music teacher, a Spanish language course for kindergarten students, and computer classes for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. We offer before and after school care for children through the age of ten. We're here during winter and spring break, snow days, and days when school is not in session but parents still have to go to work. In addition, we provide a summer camp for the children where they can participate in many activities and practice their reading skills.

We work closely with the parents, and heartily welcome their input and ideas. We send a lesson plan home with every child on Fridays so their parents are aware of what will be taught the following week. Parents are encouraged to discuss each day's activities with their child, come to the school to observe the children in a classroom setting, and even work with the teachers and participate in classroom activities.

Each day we provide the children with several snacks and a hot lunch. The lunches are cooked fresh every day and are served to the children without cost. Appropriate lunches are always available to children having special dietary requirements due to health or religious reasons.

Our staff is very dedicated and has been with us for years. All staff members either have completed their college education or will be graduating soon. We limit class sizes to enable us to offer individual attention to each child, and we strive to be flexible to the needs of both the children in our care and their parents.
